The West Mesa Aquatic Center also features an indoor recreation pool that has a massive water slide and a beach-like zero-slope design. The pool's movable floor can be adjusted from zero- to 6-feet for various activities. The pool also has two 1-meter diving boards and a 3-meter diving board. The pool can be set for eight 50-meter lanes or two dozen 25-yard lanes. This is an excellent pool for lap swimming, recreational swimming, exercise classes, swim meets (stadium seating to accommodate 800 spectators) and other activities. Still to come is an updated HVAC system and automated controls making it a City of Albuquerque smart building. The original Aquatics Center is celebrating it's 25th birthday this year! In recognition of 25 years of Aquatics programming offered to the west side community, the City of Albuquerque has invested 2 million dollars into numerous renovations to include: New paved parking lot, new play features in the outdoor pool, refurbished water slides and indoor pool play features, renovated classroom, new ADA chair lifts, new Generation 7 timing system, new LCD scoreboard, shade structures in the outdoor pool area, new THUNDERDOME, new fencing along Fortuna road, and a vast number of other facility repairs and improvements. The Aquatic Center opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1998 and was just the indoor and outdoor slide pools the Olympic pool was built in a later phase in 2006. Towanda reopened on October 18, 2021, with a new fitness area, equipment room, kitchen, multipurpose and STEM rooms and indoor and outdoor basketball courts.West Mesa Aquatic Center is the site of the City's Olympic pool on the west side of town. Following its closure in 2018, BCRP prioritized its renovation recognizing the need for additional recreational access in the surrounding community. The back of the center overlooks the Clifton Park pool. The center can host a workout group such as yoga, a cooking class or reception, special events like birthday parties or classes, and computer training. At a $3.1 million cost, the first phase built a gorgeous main center with a community room, computer lab, fitness and locker rooms, game room, kitchen, and arts & crafts room. In the first of two major construction phases, the sparkling new center converted an existing pavilion sitting atop a historic 1920s pool bathhouse. She served as a member of the Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello Community Board and was often called the “Mayor of Coldstream-Homestead Montebello.” The center is named after the long-time Baltimore City Councilperson from the 3rd District until her retirement in 1999. The first of four new facilities to be erected as part of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's 2011 plan for a network of high-quality, multi-use centers, Rita Church Community Center in Clifton Park was dedicated on July 15, 2013. The recreation center is located in East Baltimore near North Avenue and Kirk Bus Division. This recreation center was named after the notable African-American scientist and educator, Cecil Kirk.
